Suppose you:
1) have some antivirus software on windows. It makes build process painfully slow.
2) have ccache installed on linux workstation.
P.S. glad to see you in Linux land.

Hi,

1) Yes, MS essentials but with realtime scan disabled so it should not impact. I disabled it exactly because it slows everything down.
2) Not sure, I am using Mint default installation.

Perhaps it is the MinGW emulation layer that has some impact but the difference is huge.

Just found a SVN client that looks exactly like TortoiseSVN :): nemo-rabbitVCS

I really hope it is bug free enough, I really like it.

So far:
- Sane and configurable desktop environment check.
- Firefox check.
- Thunderbird check.
- Java, Eclipse, GCC and OpenOCD check.
- Subversion client check.
- Telegram check.
- FTP check.
- Multimedia check.
- Wine covers all the small tools I made with Delphi, check.
- Office-like applications check.

This covers pretty much most my common home tasks except gaming but that does not happen so often anymore, I am an happy camper.

I have never use Delphi but you can try this to build projects natively:

Thanks, I will install and give it a try, I used to use Delphi a lot and still like it.

There are few tools I would like to port but mainly the "license changer", something I use to mass update all headers in ChibiOS source files.

Nice to see you in the Linux camp, Giovanni!
I have a Windows machine at work and it makes me crazy with every project build.
At home I have only Ubuntu and it works extremely fast with gcc.
BTW many Steam games have Linux versions, like Bioshock infinite, so it is not so bad as you might expect.

Hi Giovanni,

Would you plan to make a ChibiStudio version for Linux distribution?
regards,

Theo.

I already have created a ChibiStudio-like environment for me but I am not planning to make a package because it would require several tweaks after unpacking it. It would not be so straightforward.

Probably I will just refresh this guide which contains the steps required to create it: http://www.chibios.org/dokuwiki/doku.ph ... s:eclipse1

Thanks for this tutorial.

I finally build STM32F4 testhal ADC project. So it is great for me I will use eclipse and make more test to see if I can definitely use this tool.

Theo.

Hi,

My impressions after one week of use:

1) It is fast and efficient.
2) You will have small problems with almost anything you try to do (see below).
3) Use Google-fu and you will fine answers for most of the above problems.
4) Because of 2 it is still not ready for a general audience.
5) It is still fragmented like I remembered, probably more.

Examples of problems:
1) I had to unplug headphones or I would hear nothing from loudspeakers, time wasted.
2) Netflix wont work with Firefox because reasons, I had to change the browser ID string to make it work (Netflix to blame here but still...).
3) I had to add an arcane group into my administrator user in order to access USB com ports.
4) I had to add an arcane rule to /etc/somewhere to make OpenOCD work.
5) I had to add an environment variable to make Eclipse NOT use GTK3 because of visual bugs.
6) You can install from repositories things that makes no sense for your setup, for example I can install Gnome3 tools that are useless under Cinnamon and still able to run them and change non-existing settings.

Everything has a solution but very few things just work, good enough for me but it is still not yet the year of Linux Desktop (tm).

Microsoft managed to make Windows (10 but now even 7) much more inconvenient than all the above little problems so I am not going back anyway.

Giovanni
